Dior shows its Spring/Summer 2027 collection in Paris this afternoon, on the second day of the week. Before that, the house had already told the industry where it will be in eight months: Jonathan Anderson will present Dior's Cruise 2028 collection in Shanghai on Friday, May 14, 2027, as reported by The Impression and PAP Magazine. The venue has not been announced.
Why Shanghai, in Dior's own telling
The house frames it as a return. Christian Dior named a look "Shanghai" in his 1948 couture collection, and John Galliano staged a major Dior show in the city in 2010, as reported by PAP Magazine. May 2027 would be the first big Dior runway there in seventeen years.
It is also Anderson's second cruise for the house. His first, Cruise 2027, was shown at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in May 2026, as reported by The Impression, after Dior's recent traveling shows in Scotland and Rome. Anderson took over Dior's women's collections in June 2025 and now oversees women's, men's and couture, the first designer to hold all three since Christian Dior himself.
Being first is the point
Dior announcing in September, eight months out and before any other major French house, as reported by The Impression, turns the destination into a claim on the calendar. Whoever else was considering Shanghai for May 2027 now has to go second in the same city, or go somewhere else.
The timing inside the month matters too. The announcement landed in the days before Paris, so the house walks into this afternoon's show with its next chapter already in the headlines. That is the traveling show doing what it is for: a local event in a strategic market, and a global news story months before anyone sees a garment.
The market underneath the romance
The Impression describes Shanghai as a "strategically important luxury market" for the house, and that is the plain version of the 1948 story. China was the engine of luxury growth for a decade and then the drag, which is the backdrop to the uneven recovery we tracked in the first-half results. Choosing to stage the house's biggest event outside Paris there, in May 2027, reads as a bet that the Chinese client is worth courting in person again.
What to watch
Three things between now and May. Whether other houses answer with their own Asian cruise dates, or steer clear of the region. Where in Shanghai Dior chooses to show, since the venue will say whether this is a heritage story on the Bund or a contemporary one in the new city. And how much of this afternoon's Paris collection already points east. We will come back to it when the venue is named.
